Kate has been suffering through Migraine Headaches for the past 20 some-odd years. She’s tried everything from conventional to off-the-wall treatment. Nothing’s worked. She’s writing in to find out if CBD Oil would be a good option.
My migraines started when I was 16 years old. I’m now 38 and am still battling them. In fact, they’ve become much worse. I get them more and more often and they’re more painful than before.
I’d say I get about a migraine a week and it can last up to 3 days. Pretty quickly, the throbbing turns into a pounding pain and without fail I get nauseous and end up vomiting.
I’m left completely debilitated on these days. All the important things that I have to get done are left to wayside. I’m locked up in my room with the shades drawn. And the house rules are that when mommy has a headache, my kids and husband use their inside voices. I hate that my problem becomes their problem too.
My doctor put me on prescription meds, but either I get really uncomfortable side effects from them or they just don’t work. One of them made the entire right side of my body go numb. And, another made the nausea and vomiting worse. It was morning sickness dejavu from pregnancy all over again.
Right now, I use Imitrex. But, the problem is that if I don’t catch the headache at just the right time, then I’ve completely lost the opportunity to stop the migraine and I have to bear through it for the next 2 to 3 days. Sadly, over-the-counter pain medications do nothing for my pain.
I’ve tried every therapy known to man. Biofeedback Therapy. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Relaxation Therapy. I did my rounds with the Chiropractor, Acupuncturist, Massage Therapist. I’ve even tried stuff probably no one’s even heard of before, like butterbur and feverfew. Nothing, absolutely nothing is helping.
I’m kinda desperate at this point.
So what’d you think? CBD Oil for migraines and headaches? Yay or nay?

Kate, bearing through migraines headaches can definitely be tough. So, here’s what I can tell you. CBD in general has helped my patients to relieve the pain of their migraine headaches – whether the CBD comes from marijuana or from hemp. Most usually when you hear the words “CBD oil,” the CBD is generally derived from hemp. Either way, your body recognizes the CBD as the same. Of course, with the hemp-based CBD, you don’t have to worry about the high because the amount of THC in Hemp is less than 0.3%. And, with a marijuana-based CBD product, you have to look closely at either the packaging or lab test result to figure out just how much more CBD there is relative to the THC.
But, all in all, my patients have reported back all good things. There are 3 main areas that the CBD helps their migraines headaches with.
Many of my patients have reported that CBD helps to reduce the severity of their migraine headaches. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst, on average, my patients say that the CBD helps to bring their pain down from a 7-9 to a 1-3.
My patients have also reported that CBD helps to reduce the duration of their migraine headaches – how long their migraines last.
It use to be that when my patients were taking a Triptan, they absolutely had to catch the migraine at just the right time, and if they didn’t, they’d end up having to bear through the migraine for the next 2 to 3 days.
With CBD, my patients reported that they were not limited to using it only within a certain frame of time and when they did use the CBD, the migraine headaches resolved within an hour or so.
Most of my patients usually tell me that prior to using CBD, they were having migraine headaches on average about 1 to 3 times a month. Once they started using CBD, they had migraine headaches much less frequently, about once every 3 to 6 months. Now, in the best case scenarios, patients reported that the CBD eliminated their migraines.
