Hey there! Welcome to #AskDrPatel where I answer your questions about CBD and CBD products!

Question: This question comes in from Anna, and Anna's asking any information you can give me about CBD and teen ADHD would be much appreciated.

Answer:

Okay, so in terms of information about CBD let's just start with some general information right off the bat, okay?

What Is CBD?

CBD is a chemical made by the cannabis Sativa plant and the cannabis Sativa plant family consists of both marijuana and hemp. Now the difference between the two, between hemp and marijuana, really boils down to a legal distinction. The plant in and of themselves are essentially the same. The legal distinction is the amount of THC.

Hemp by law has less than 0.3 % THC and marijuana then by default has more than 0.3 percent THC. Both make CBD, but as I just mentioned they both make different amounts of THC. So right off the bat that's the difference between hemp and marijuana-based product.

So you can have high CBD marijuana-based products and you can also have high CBD hemp products as well.

Can I Give My Child CBD for ADHD?

Okay, now let's talk about ADHD. So I have in fact treated patients with ADHD. Typically the story is that it's an adolescent that the parent is bringing in to be seen by me and that's because they caught their child using marijuana, typically off the streets or they're getting marijuana from their friends. And so the parents you know have a discussion with their adolescent. Turns out that the adolescent says that "hey you know using the marijuana helps me focus and concentrate at school". So then really the ultimately the parent is like okay well since you're using it we might as well have you use it correctly.

When It Comes To ADHD, What Do I Need To Look For When I Shop For CBD?

So let me give you some basics when it comes to CBD and for teenagers with ADHD, really what you're looking for are high amounts of CBD as opposed to high amounts of THC. That is generally what helps the focus and concentration and it can be a marijuana-based product it can also be hemp-based

product. Typically parents opted to go for a hemp-based product so that they don't have to worry as much about the high amounts of THC that marijuana has so and again hemp-based products have less than 0.3% THC.

What Are The Benefits of CBD?

Now in terms of results, in addition to being able to focus and concentrate better, parents also notice an improvement in academic performance. They also notice that there are fewer behavioral complaints coming in from the adolescent’s teachers. So that's what I can tell you about ADHD in a nutshell!
